John Hoiles (UK)

John Hoiles, a pioneering figure in the realm of water skiing, embarked on his aquatic journey in 1967 at the Gillingham Water Ski Club in the UK. His initial foray involved navigating the waters with a modest 12ft Fletcher boat, but as his family expanded to include Mary, Tim, and Philip, John's vision led him to construct a larger vessel, showcasing both his resourcefulness and commitment to the sport.

In 1970, John assumed the role of chief scrutineer for the British Water Ski Federation (BWSF), quickly extending his influence to the international stage. His burgeoning involvement in racing within Great Britain and the British Federation paved the way for his pivotal role in the European Racing Council, where his boundless enthusiasm and ambition propelled the sport to new heights.

A pivotal moment in John's legacy unfolded in 1978 when he journeyed to Australia to collaborate with fellow visionaries, including Ian Graham, Terry Bennett, and Glen Coles, to organize the inaugural World Water Ski Racing Championship. Together with Walter Crespi from Italy, they laid the groundwork for the event, with Glen Coles succeeding John as Chairman. The result was the highly successful 1979 World Championships held in Great Britain, a testament to John's fervor and the collective effort of the organizing team.

John's dedication extended to presiding over significant roles, including being the first President of the World Racing Council, the European Racing Council, and the GB Racing Committee. His tenure in these esteemed positions was marked by distinction and a profound impact on the sport. A respected International Judge, John's enduring contributions have left an indelible mark on the waterskiing community, shaping the sport we cherish today. While he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on, and his son Philip graciously accepts this tribute on behalf of his father.
