Stefano Gregorio (ITA)

In 1995, Stefano Gregorio, the determined Italian waterski racer, achieved a monumental victory by clinching the elusive World Water Ski Racing Title. Born on December 22, 1966, Stefano's journey into the world of water skiing commenced at the tender age of 7, but his innate athleticism extended to various sports. Growing up in Como, Northern Italy, alongside his brother Piero and sister Adonella, Stefano's early years saw him participating in slalom, tricks, jump, barefoot, and racing competitions by the age of 10.

The pivotal shift toward ski racing was guided by his coach, Augusto Luoni, whose influence crafted Stefano's distinctive style, reminiscent of a wild bull surging through turbulent waters. Training at the Jolly Racing Club at Lezzeno, Stefano earned a spot on the Italian National team in 1987. In the subsequent years, Stefano, alongside Britain's Darren Kirkland, emerged as a dominant force in European ski racing, comparable to the legendary Danny Bertels from Belgium.

At 20, Stefano joined the Italian National team, securing the European Formula 2 championship with nine consecutive victories across Europe. His remarkable debut in the French Grand-Prix saw him not only triumph in the F2 category but also outpace all F1 skiers, marking a highlight in his illustrious career. Despite facing setbacks in earlier World Championships, Stefano's breakthrough came in 1993 at Vichy, France, where he displayed unparalleled prowess, only to be marred by a judges' decision resulting in a penalty.

Persistence paid off in 1995 when Stefano claimed the World Title in Belgium, expressing profound satisfaction for his career's trajectory. Beyond the accolades, Stefano's dedication to the sport involved rigorous training routines, showcasing his commitment to maintaining peak performance. His retirement from racing led to new ventures, including the establishment of a ski school with his wife Patrizia Sala. Stefano's enduring love for the sport and commitment to supporting young talents underscore his profound impact on the waterski racing community.
