In a thrilling showcase of skill and determination, Team Europe recently concluded a week of intense racing at the World Waterski Racing Championships 2023 near Sydney, Australia. Among the standout performers were Team Belgium and Team UK, both of whom delivered exceptional performances on the world stage.
Kicking off the impressive display was Sam Hopkins from the UK, competing in the Junior Boys category. Securing a remarkable 9th place, Sam emerged as the highest male point scorer for Team Europe. What makes this achievement even more extraordinary is that Sam decided to compete just a couple of weeks before the championships, making his leading position a testament to his innate talent and dedication. Following closely were Elias Meirsman from Belgium, finishing 10th, and Cody Kirkland from the UK, securing the 11th spot.
While the women's F1 category didn't see European representation, Demi Fobelets from Belgium made a significant impact in the F2 category, clinching a commendable 5th place. Competing against the top athletes from Australia and the United States, Demi showcased remarkable skill and determination. Emily Cannings, making her Women's World Championships debut after an impressive 4th place finish in the 2019 Vichy Worlds, gained invaluable experience in preparation for the 2025 Worlds.
In the Men's F2 category, newcomers Mike Muyshondt from Belgium and Rory Kirkland from the UK made their mark in their first World Championships. Mike secured the 10th position, while Rory closely followed in 11th. Nick Butler from the UK contributed significantly, finishing 14th and accumulating crucial points for Team UK.
In the Men's F1 category, Steven Van Gaeveren from Belgium, a former F2 world champion, showcased his prowess by securing the 9th position overall. Completing two out of four races with impressive points, Steven's performance added substantial value to Team Europe. Unfortunately, Tim Lisens from Belgium faced challenges and couldn't complete the week-long racing.
